In the 1970s, The Smith Opera House was in danger of having to permanently close. The newly formed Finger Lakes Art Council – a group of five Genevans who met over coffee one day and mapped out a plan to save the theater – succeeded in its efforts and on September 29, 1978, The Smith triumphantly reopened its doors to the disco beat of Saturday Night Fever. Please join us for this special commemorative screening of John Badham’s classic film about Tony Manero (John Travolta), a young man who finds joy on the dance floor while navigating class, ethnicity, and toxic masculinity in real life. Co-starring Karen Lynn Gorney, Donna Pescow, and Barry Miller and set to a driving soundtrack by the Bee Gees, Saturday Night Fever features some of the most famous musical numbers in film. It is also a crucial piece of Smith history that reflects the determination and resilience of the Geneva community.
