Taughannock Falls (pronounced Tuh-GA-nick) carves a 400-foot deep gorge through layers of sandstone, shale, and limestone that were once the bed of an ancient sea. With a 215-foot plunge, the falls stand three stories taller than Niagara Falls. Enjoy swimming in Cayuga Lake, a picnic area, concessions, a playground, camping, cabins, and more. Multiple hiking trails provide views of the falls and the gorge. It is strongly advised to stay on the trails and to not enter the water without a lifeguard present. The rock beds can be slippery, so if you do walk through the shallower areas to cool off, please know that it is at your own risk, so use caution and wear water shoes with grippy bottoms.
