A Message From the Executive Director

Welcome to the N-AHS website!  We’re glad you found it. I’m sure you will find some interesting information about the Newark-Arcadia Historical Society and the museum. Keep checking back to get the latest news about our activities, programs, events and fascinating exhibits.

The N-AHS was founded in 1992. We’ve been growing and evolving ever since. Our finest achievements include the acquisition of our buildings.  The historic Marbletown Schoolhouse was obtained in 1993.  In 1997, we purchased the building on the southeast corner of High and Mason for a museum and meeting place. It opened with great fanfare during the NewarkFest weekend in June 1999.

The Museum has good company at its location. Not only are we in an historic neighborhood, but we are across the street from the Newark Public Library (built 1900). Inside the library is the Hoffman Clock Museum, which has been operating since 1954. We like to call the area “Newark’s Cultural Corner”.

We hope you will visit us sometime in the near future. There is quite an array of both changing and permanent exhibits on all manner of Newark’s history dating back to the 1820s. Newark was a true Erie Canal town, founded by a canal builder and superintendent named Joseph Miller back in 1819. The rest, shall we say, is history!

Newark and the town of Arcadia have much to be proud of. We have a rich and unique history. We were the home of Sarah Coventry, the biggest fine fashion jewelry company in the world. We also were nationally known as The Rose Capital of America with the largest rose gardens in the world, created by the largest growers, Jackson & Perkins.

We hope you will consider joining the hundreds of members who share your love of local history. We welcome you and know you will enjoy all we have to offer.

Historically yours,

Christopher Davis,  Executive Director

About

Museum Link
Schoolhouse Link

The Society owns and maintains two buildings. In 1993, the Historic 1876 brick Marbletown Schoolhouse was acquired as a gift from the Marbletown Neighborhood Center.  The museum was purchased in 1997.

The members meet quarterly, highlighted by a special Annual Meeting and Dinner in the spring. An informative newsletter is issued in advance of each meeting.

The Newark-Arcadia Historical Society’s list of achievements is impressive. Educational programs and tours, all open to the public, have been very successful and well received. A number of tours have been held since October 1997, including historic houses, barns and cemeteries. The society holds an annual old-fashioned strawberry social with live music in June of each year.

We hope you will visit the museum soon or consider joining the historical society!
